?Sometimes, I feel quite proud of myself?

Niels Ummels
Niels Ummels started working as a welder at NTS CombiMetaal in Bergeijk when he was seventeen. His job is never boring. ‘There's a lot of variation in the projects. As things stand, I haven't finished learning and welding isn't what I want to end up doing. No matter how much fun it is, I'm not going to spend the rest of my life in the workshop.’

Ummels is regarded as one of the top welders at NTS CombiMetaal, but does not really like being tagged in this way. ‘I work in Prototyping – our stainless steel and aluminium department – together with five other welders. Some of them have been working here for decades. Being able to weld properly is a question of patience and experience. They have that too. I owe a lot to the intermediate vocational education course I took, especially the practical training. At NTS, my second employer, I was able to take level two and three welding courses after that. When I passed I thought it meant I had finished training. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.... In a few months, I will have completed level four. The support I have received from NTS has been fantastic.’

Ummels' work mainly involves producing constructions and cabinets for modules for demanding customers like ASML. Ummels: ‘No day is exactly the same. We work on small series with five to fifteen items. Every product has to be top quality. Sometimes, I feel quite proud of myself when I see that we have managed to achieve that level of quality. I'm 21 now and too young to stop learning. I therefore see myself going further. In this respect, it's great that NTS is an exceptionally broad company in which you can progress in many different directions. I'll focus on welding for the next few years, and that I really don’t mind!’
